Key Stats: LHP Jackson Wolf 6 IP, 5 H, ER, 6 K; RHP Alek Jacob 1.1 IP, BB, 2 K; 1B Luis Campusano 2-for-4, 2B, HR (14), 2 R, RBI; CF Brandon Lockridge 2-for-5; RF Yonathan Perlaza 1-for-2, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB; 2B Nate Mondou 3-for-3, 2 R, BB

Prospect Watch: While the Padres’ offense continues to struggle, Luis Campusano remains an offensive juggernaut in El Paso. Campusano doubled and hit his team-leading 14th home run of the season, and is hitting .360/.448/.560 this month – slightly below his season line. He has reached base safely multiple times in all but one July game. Notably, Campusano made his fifth start at first base, where he was a perfect 7-for-7 on putouts. … After allowing 30 earned runs in 18.2 innings over his last five starts, Jackson Wolf turned in his best start of the year to pick up his fourth win. The 26-year-old lefty gave up only one run as he threw six innings for the first time since May 8. While Wolf relies heavily on location and often gets hit hard when he misses, his velocity was up almost 2.5 mph from his year average in this one, helping him rack up 12 whiffs while not allowing a walk for the first time since April. On the season, Wolf has 83 strikeouts and 26 walks in 75 innings while working to a 5.76 ERA. … On May 14, Alek Jacob had a 2.75 ERA with the Padres. He then allowed 12 earned runs over his next 3.2 innings and was sent down. Jacob has now been in El Paso for 12 games. In two of those, he failed to record an out and allowed eight combined runs. In his other 10 appearances, he has given up just one earned run with 14 strikeouts and a 0.87 WHIP. He hasn’t allowed a hit in his last four appearances.

Key Stats: LHP Jagger Haynes 5.1 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 7 K; RHP Andrew Moore 2 IP, H, 3 K; C Brandon Valenzuela 2-for-4, 3 RBI, BB; SS Francisco Acuna 1-for-3, R, RBI, 2 BB, SB (15); CF Kai Murphy 2-for-3, R, BB; RF Moisés Gómez 1-for-4, 3B, R, BB; LF Wyatt Hoffman 1-for-3, RS, SB (6), BB

Prospect Watch: Brandon Valenzuela came into this one in a 2-for-22 slump without an RBI in his last six games. He changed that in a big way Wednesday as he had a pair of hits, including a game-winning two-run single in the ninth. The 24-year-old has cooled off since his high-water mark of .276/.359/.471 on June 21, but his current .757 OPS is still his highest since 2021 and 21% above league average. Behind the plate, he was credited with a caught stealing, giving him 22 on the season and a 34% success rate.  By comparison, the Padres’ big league catchers have thrown out a combined 14 of 69 base runners (20%). … Jagger Haynes was cruising until the sixth inning when he suddenly lost command. The 24-year-old had allowed four baserunners over the first 5.1 innings before hitting top prospect Walker Jenkins. After that, the wheels fell off. Haynes committed two throwing errors on pickoffs and walked his only two batters on the night before being removed. Despite the messy end to his outing, the lone member from the Padres’ 2020 draft class left in the organization had his best strikeout performance in two months with seven. … Andrew Moore picked up his second win of the season. He struck out three while allowing only one baserunner over two innings. The righty who was acquired for Connor Joe showed a strong fastball, slider, and curve mix. When he has control of his pitches, his stuff is devastating, leading to a 32% strikeout rate and Texas League opponents hitting just .164 against him. Unfortunately, the 25-year-old also struggles with both control and command, and has issued 15 walks in 17 innings.

Prospect Watch: It was a tough day for the TinCaps offense which had only five total baserunners. Leo De Vries hit a ninth-inning double to salvage his game. Over his last nine games, the 18-year-old is hitting .281/.425/.531 with only three strikeouts and he now has as many extra-base hits in seven July games as he did in the previous 27 contests. While he has stabilized things defensively over the last six weeks, he committed two more errors Wednesday and now has a league-leading 18 on the season. … After an inconsistent start by Sam WhitingNick Wissman came on in relief and threw a perfect 2.1 innings. After allowing 14 earned runs over eight innings in May, the 24-year-old has allowed two earned runs over his last 14.1 innings.  His three strikeouts tie his career high.  Ruben Galindo pitched a perfect ninth inning with a strikeout. Since returning from the IL on June 14, the 24-year-old has allowed one earned run and struck out 14 over 9.1 innings.

Storm 10, Visalia Rawhide 4

Key Statistics: LHP Kash Mayfield 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R (0 ER), 2 BB, 2 K; SS Cobb Hightower 2-for-5, 2 2B, R, BB, SB (4); 3B Zach Evans 1-for-5, R, 3 RBI, BB, 2B; 1B Victor Figueroa 2-for-6, 2B, R, RBI; LF Ryan Wilson 2-for-4, 2B, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB

Prospect Watch: The top pick in last year’s draft, Kash Mayfield, continues to work in short bursts, lasting only three innings while tossing 54 pitches. The 20-year-old issued a pair of walks and a wild pitch, but could have gotten out of the game unscathed. He was charged with an unearned run in the first after a leadoff single, sacrifice, passed ball and a sac fly, then had another run come across in the second on two infield hits and an error. While Mayfield hasn’t gone more than three innings in two months, he has a stunning 44.3% strikeout rate over that span. … Cobb Hightower, who was selected two rounds after Mayfield, had one of his best professional games thus far, collecting multiple extra-base hits for the first time. The 20-year-old had a pair of doubles and swiped his third base of the month as he continues to work back from a series of leg injuries this year. Hightower is hitting .208/.406/.417 in July. … Harvard product Tanner Smith, 22, picked up his first professional win while striking out three over two scoreless innings. Since joining the Storm last month, the 450th pick in last year’s draft has allowed one run over 6.2 innings. The big-bodied righty has shown enticing stuff as he works back from Tommy John surgery while he was with the Crimson. … Ryan Wilson reached base three times for the first time in over three weeks as he snapped out of a 4-for-31 slump. After hitting .276 with a .791 OPS in April, Wilson has fallen back and the 23-year-old is hitting .239 with a .680 OPS in his second pass at the Cal League.

Transactions: Before the game, the Padres promoted Kale Fountain from Peoria. Last year’s fifth round pick hit .262/.386/.364 in Peoria as he built up from off-season Tommy John surgery. He’ll split time with Victor Figueroa and Lamar King Jr. at first base and designated hitter heading into the All-Star break.

ACL Padres 7, ACL Mariners 3

Key Statistics: CF Kasen Wells 2-for-5, R, 2 RBI; DH Yimy Tovar 1-for-3, 2 BB; LF Gustavo Marquez 2-for-2, 2B, R, 2 RBI, BB; RHP Langston Burkett 3 IP, 2 H, 5 K

Prospect Watch: On May 11, Kasen Wells stole his league-leading 23rd stolen base of the season in the Cal League.  A few games later, he fouled a ball off his foot and wound up missing nearly six weeks with a broken bone. Last year’s 16th-round pick returned to action on a rehab assignment and picked up where he left off, collecting two hits in his return to games. Prior to the injury, Wells was hitting .283/.388/.368 reaching base safely 64 times in 38 games. His 23 stolen bases to one caught stealing is still the top success rate in the Cal League among players with as many attempts. … Yimy Tovar, who is also on a rehab assignment from Lake Elsinore, had a hit and two walks. He should return to the Storm shortly. … Langston Burkett worked three scoreless innings and struck out five without allowing a walk. After allowing 19 earned runs in his first 8.2 innings of the year, the 20-year-old has not allowed a run over his last nine innings. An undrafted free agent out of high school in 2023, the big righty has allowed only six hits and two walks while striking out nine as he has locked in his command.
